Top 5 Movies for Horror Lovers

Number 5: IT Follows

Director: David Robert Mitchell

Writer: David Robert Mitchell

Cast: Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Olivia Luccardi, Jake Weary

IT Follows, to not be confused with the famous IT and the joker film series is a metaphorically driven movie. The metaphor was not very clear to me after watching it. The horror of an entity following and visible to only YOU is the primary spine chilling experience of the story.

Maika Monroe as Jay has carried the whole plot so strongly that it is difficult not to be engrossed.

Notices:

The entities always wear a sleeping attire

The metaphor is relating the infection to STDs, AIDS

So number 5 is a great horror one-time binge, do not miss it!

Number 4: Conjuring 1

Director: James Wan

Writer: Chad Hayes, Carey W. Hayes

Cast: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Lili Taylor, Joey King, Sterling Jerins

I understand the name is a bit worn down but this movie is a masterpiece. Horror movies are difficult to build.

Take for Insidious, mute it and you realise that sound is the only element holding gravitas. But I have given a lot of movies, what I call the ‘Insidious Test’, and Conjuring’s plot passed with flying colours. The story, cast, structure, direction is flawlessly crafted and realising that, unlike other movies that are restricted by poor imagination, Conjuring was limited by its honesty as it is based on a true story and is yet so riveting. Conjuring series overall aren’t reflected on this list but Conjuring 1, YES, you have got to see it if you haven’t seen it already. Also, one of those movies that you can watch and re-watch.

Number 3: Annihilation

Director: Alex Garland

Writer: Jeff VanderMeer

Cast: Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Oscar Isaac

The sci-fi horror story is based on an alien shimmer that is questioned by researchers. The shimmer keeps growing and is so analysed by task forces. Lena, portrayed by Natalie Portman, participates in the task force in hopes to understand the mysteries that affect beings as well as her husband.

I absolutely loved the movie with or without understanding the metaphor right away. The shimmer is based on cancer and duplicating of tumorous cells.

Number 2: Sixth Sense

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Writer: M. Night Shyamalan

Cast: Haley Joel Osment, Bruce Willis, Toni Collette

Sixth Sense was a story of how a young boy was terrorized by the fact that he could see ghosts. Bruce Willis plays the role of a child psychologist who tries to guide him through the issue. The climax however is brilliantly crafted. A classic horror must-watch.

Number 1: Hereditary

Director: Ari Aster

Writer: Ari Aster

Cast: Toni Collette, Milly Shapiro, Alex Wolff, Ann Dowd, Florence Pugh

Relatively new style to fit into this list. This horror drama film had me startled for days with entirely new concepts and TONS of hidden easter eggs. The movie ends leaving no loose ends and no lights-off while sleeping 😛 Highly recommended, viewer discretion advised.

Bonus Movie: Midsommar

Director: Ari Aster

Writer: Ari Aster

Cast: Florence Pugh, Will Poulter, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper

As promised, here is a bonus movie where viewer discretion is strictly advised. It bends more to psychological horror and ritualistic beliefs, something that particularly will freak out the audience. So to avoid being traumatized and nauseated after watching it, make sure that you have a good appetite for cult-ritualistic-suicidal psychological horror.
